Niška Banja and its surrounding make possible, for both patients and tourists, good recreation and interesting excursions, as well. There are nearby two gorges, three monasteries, a few archeology areas and history places, as well. Jelašnička gorge is about three km far from Niška Banja.
Five km, up the river, far from the sanatorium, the river Nišava had cut remarkable Sićevo gorge, here and there of canyon layout. Through this gorge, there are highways along the river Nišava – highway and railway towards Sofia and Istanbulu. In the gorge above the river there is the Christian monastery Sićevo from the XIVth century. About four km far from Sićevo, known by famous vineyards, there is monastery St. Petka, and not far from the Spa there is monastery St. Pantelejmon.
SIĆEVO GORGE is a beautiful, attractive canyon, 17 km long, the river Nišava flows through it with big foll of its flow, often changes its course and makes cascades. In this peaceful ambient, there are more than 30 churches and monasteries, of exceptional history value. Because of its natural values, Sićevo gorge is proclaimed the Special preserve of nature. Five km far from the village Sićevo, on the highway Niš-Sofija, there is a hotel “Sićevo”, with 72 beds, surrounded by sport grounds for basketball, volley-ball, handball and a football field, ideal for organizing sport camps, and picturesque surrounding, makes interesting walks, mountaineering and fishing possible. Attractive canyon of the river Nišava, is also ideal place for kayak. On this flow, numerous international competitions had already taken place.
JELAŠNICA GORGE, 15 km in the East from Niš, with plenty natural beauties, attractive stone shapes and waterfalls, as well as with rare flora, was proclaimed the Special preserve of nature. Endemic example is the herb “Ramonda Serbica” which had found here ideal conditions for its growth.
SUVA MOUNTAIN is 15 km East from Niša. As the massif it represents a separate geological and climate entity in the South-East part of Serbia. The highest peaks of Suva mountain are: Trem (1810 m), Falcon’s rock, Kolov rock etc. (Mosor, Black rock and Wideness).
Suva (Dry) mountain has got its name because of the fact that there are only few springs of water on the whole mountain. The biggest are Bojana’s water – 860 m (under the Falcon’s rock) and Rakoš fountain (on the side of the mountain towards Bela Palanka).
Suva mountain is under the protection of the Republic of Serbia and there are numerous organizations who pledge that this Mountain gets the status of the National Park.
In the past, there was the road that passed over the Suva Mountain, it was called the Emperor road.
On the last weekend in February, the mountaineering march is held under the title “Winter climb to Trem”, when more than 600 mountaineers get together, from all parts of Balkan. This is also the most numerous Balkan Winter march. This started in 1997, organized by the Mountaineering club named “Železničar” from Niš.
BOJANA’S WATER, the outing on the mountain side of Suva Mountain, 25 km far from the city, there is skiing way 900 m long, with height difference of 320 m, and with exceptionally wide istekom, especially convenient for the slalom competition. In the Suva mountain (Bojana’s water) there is mountaineering hostel, named “Studenac” with very good lodging (more than 50 beds), with authentic restaurant with the fire place, fish ponds with trout (specialty of the restaurant is trout cooked under the hot cover), with excursion tours and skiing ways.
