The Cardiology Department of Institue Niška Banja focuses on the application of all types of latest non-invasive diagnostic procedures and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Cardiology treats the following urgent cardiac conditions:

• Acute myocardial infraction (heart attack)
• Acute heart failure (deterioration of a chronic heart failure)
• Hypertensive crisis
• Aortic dissection
• Pulmonary embolism
• Arrhythmia – malignant arrhythmia and conduction disorders
• Pericarditis- cardiac tamponade

and performs interventions within the cardiac emergency room. On the other hand, through specialists examination the department’s staff triages patients which require urgent care and examination for cardiovascular assessment.

There are 40 hospital beds divided among the following units: Coronary Care Unit, Semi-Intensive Care with state-of-the-art non-invasive functional diagnostics. The department has very successful hyperlipidemia, hypertension, coronary disease and heart failure units. In the units patients are informed about the nature of their disease and the complete condition with all the risk factors. Treatment is prescribed in accordance with all valid European and global protocols (guidelines), but always adjusted to suit each patient’s condition.

Coronary Care Unit (6 beds):

The unit as it is can project the treatment of 430 patients with 2400 in-hospital days in total.

Semi-Intensive Care (3 beds) :

Projected treatment of 370 patients with 2100 in-     hospital days.

General Care Ward – Cardiology (16 twin-bedded rooms). Total capacity: 32 beds.

The ward has enough space to accommodate patients in order to provide an adequate diagnosis, treatment, the assessment of work ability and early rehabilitation of cardiac patients. The existing capacity allows the projection of 1100 patients with 8500 in-hospital days in total.

As an important part of its activity the department is dedicated towards the education of cadre in the field of cardiology. Also, the department has an active role in scientific work.

Most of the doctors are well-educated and experienced in all non-invasive diagnostic procedures beside their day-to-day responsibilities in the department’s units (echo cardiogram, stress test, 24-hour holter monitoring, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring). All the doctors, nurses, and medical technicians have passed the Emergency Medicine and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation course.

Cardiology is designed to receive and treat all urgent conditions in the field of non-invasive cardiology including the possibility of a pacemaker insertion. As a part of the cardiac diagnostics  pharmacological and stress-induced stress tests are done for the sake of improving diagnosis of coronary disease. The cardiac diagnostics is performed for patients treated at the department and  outpatients.

The cardiologists at Institute Niška Banja participate in various multicentric studies and many domestic and international congresses. They are the authors of many works published in international magazines and other publications. They have co-authored many university textbooks.

The department takes great pride in the successful organization of now famous biennial international cardiology symposium held at the institute. At the same time the entirety of studies presented during the symposium is published as a book that represents a valuable source of the latest breakthroughs in the field of cardiology.

Coronary Care Unit

The coronary unit is a section of Cardiology which deals with the treatment and care of patients from the area of Niš. The unit receives people who suffer from one of the aforementioned urgent conditions (acute myocardial infraction (heart attack), acute heart failure (deterioration of chronic heart failure), hypertensive crisis, aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, arrhythmia – malignant arrhythmia and conduction disorders, pericarditis – cardiac tamponade).

The unit has six beds. From the start it has gone in step with the most modern methods in the treatment and monitoring of patients with coronary disease and other acute heart diseases. Constant progress in the treatment of heart diseases have changed and adjusted the methods of treatment to the most progressive views. Every year around 1900 patients come to  the department’s wards and units form which around 430 are hospitalized in the coronary unit. The unit was renovated in 2008 when six brand new monitors were installed enabling centralized monitoring of vital functions of all patients. This led to the significantly faster and efficient reaction time on the changes of the patient’s condition and the improvement of treatment quality. Beside the coronary unit, there is semi-intensive care with three beds also equipped with monitors that track the patient’s condition.

The remaining beds are located in twin-bedded rooms on the General Care ward. Patients are  are transferred into these rooms after coronary or semi-intensive care,as well as patients staying in the institute for testing due to high risk of coronary diseases.

On the ground floor of the Radon Hospital, within the Cardiology department, there is a modernly equipped emergency room for triage and reception of patients with an acute cardiovascular pathology.
