Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, characterized by the low level of the bone mineral density and micro architectural damage of the bone tissue with the resultant increase of bone fragility and tendency to fractures.
Patients with osteoporosis do not have difficulties until the bone is broken, that can happen during the everyday activities. The most common are fractures of the vertebra body of the spinal column, neck of the thigh bone and forearm, as well. These fractures often lead to permanent disability and decrease of quality of life that is why it is important to establish decrease of bone mineral density, on time.

The best method for measuring bone mineral density is osteodensitometry on DXA densitometer. Measuring is performed on the lumbar spine, hip and forearm, measuring of the bone mineral density of the whole body is also possible.

  • Measuring of bone mineral density is recommended for:
    persons with spontaneous fractures
  • women age 65 and older who have at least one risk factor for fracture
  • persons with the following pathological state: menopause started before the age of 45, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases of the loco-motor system, long term administration of glyco- corticoids, lack of vitamin D, organ transplantation. chronic kidney impairment, Kushing's syndrome, gastrointestinal diseases (ulcer colitis, Krone's disease, after gastroectomy), chronic liver disease, medicines intake (karbazepam, tiroxine, long term administration of heparin).
  • suspicious osteoporosis after radio-graphic examination of the spinal column
  • decrease of the body height 4-5 cm
  • emphasized kifosis of the dorsal spinal column.

Examination is performed at the so called "Staro kupatilo“ ("old Bath") building – cabinet for osteodensitometry and at the basement of the stationary „Zelengora“ - room no. 20, as well.
There is no need for any preparation for this examination. Examination lasts  5-10  minutes, the dose of radiation is neglected. Medical report is issued immediately after the examination.
